We decided to join the world of alpacas in 2003. We purchased one maiden female and decided to build our herd from her. Our herd grew slowly as we were unable to purchase any more alpacas. We housed our alpacas on another farm as we searched for our own place to raise our growing heard, then life took over. Our own family unexpectedly began to grow. We were blessed with two children 18 months apart, who took over our time and attention. Finally, in 2010 we were able to bring our herd to our property and start the hands on experience. We were also able to purchase two pregnant females from another farm to expand our heard.
We love to look out our back window and see our alpacas. Our kids love to help with the care and, of course, the naming of the new crias. The kids love to put on their rubber boots and hose down the alpacas on hot summer days. We even had to buy them their own plastic shovels, so they could help pick up the poop piles. Our daughter loves to hand feed the alpacas any chance she gets. Raising alpacas has been a rewarding experience, but the true blessing is how our family has come together in caring for our animals.
